Colorado doesn’t often give you gloomy. With over 320 days of sunshine a year, gray skies feel like a rarity—and on this Halloween evening at Fountain Creek Regional Park in Fountain, Colorado, the weather showed up exactly as it needed to. Wind whipping through the trees, clouds rolling low and heavy, the air thick with that pre-rain electricity that makes everything feel a little otherworldly. It was the perfect setting for a Halloween family session that leaned into mystery, movement, and the beautifully strange.
We began grounded—documenting our family in simple, everyday street clothes. The kind of images that feel honest and familiar. The calm before the shift. Then, as the wind picked up and the light grew moodier, the masks came out. Suddenly, the session transformed into something cinematic and surreal—

part fairytale, part folklore, part haunted storybook. The contrast between the ordinary and the eerie is where the magic lived. It was playful, unsettling in the best way, and wildly expressive—proof that family photography doesn’t have to stay inside the lines to be meaningful.
With rain threatening to cut us short, we moved quickly, intentionally, using every minute we were given. The trees at Fountain Creek Regional Park swayed and whispered, the tall grasses bent and danced, and the sky felt like it could open at any moment. There was no time for perfection—only presence.

And that urgency sharpened everything. What we captured in that narrow window was frighteningly beautiful: motion-blurred laughter, wind-tangled hair, masked figures emerging from the landscape like characters from a dream you don’t want to wake up from.
This session is a reminder of why I believe so deeply in documenting your people as they are—and sometimes, as they imagine themselves to be. Family sessions don’t have to be polished or predictable to be powerful. They can be bold. They can be weird. They can tell a story that feels uniquely yours. Especially on days when the weather breaks the rules and the world feels just a little darker around the edges.

Because the ordinary deserves to be remembered—even when it’s spooky.
And sometimes, especially then.
